4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent companion to The Last Grain Race, 10 Sept. 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Learning the Ropes: An Apprentice in the Last of the Windjammers (Hardcover)
Contains some of the same photographs and text as in the Last Grain Race but there are many more photos and all are better quality. If you are into Tall Ships then the photographs give a wonderful record of the life of the crew and the conditions they had to endure.

This was a book that I'd been searching for a long time, second hand editions were quite expensive and this one was a very good buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who needs a time machine?, 27 Feb. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Learning the Ropes: An Apprentice in the Last of the Windjammers (Hardcover)
I can still scarcely believe this book exists. Here is a world in which Horatio Hornblower (or Horatio Nelson) would feel at home, but it is being experienced *and photographed* by a young 20th century lad only a few years before I was born. This is not a historical reconstruction, it is a real working sailing ship carrying cargoes of grain from Australia to Britain via Cape Horn as ships had done for centuries. The text and above all the photographs bring this world to life marvelously, though I cannot imagine how he managed to take good photographs when perched high in the rigging in gale force winds.

Pictures are great but I would have liked more text.
