This review is from: Winter Tales (Paperback)
Definitely a Christmas read this, and very clearly written after Brown found god. Main themes are the nativity and all the cycles of nature, inevitably ending in death... I'm making it sound more depressing than it is. It's full of his usual wonderful evocations of Orkney, the ancient, wind-blown, work-a-day magic of the place, and Brown's poetic phraseology is a joy. One of those writers who can stop you dead in your tracks with a word. I loved this book, but recommend something else if you're new to him: 'Beside the Ocean of Time' is a real gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Nostalgic Tapestry of Island Life, 22 Oct 2013

This review is from: Winter Tales (Hardcover)
An assortment of short stories that transport the reader to a time long gone and a way of life that has almost disappeared. George Mackay Brown's writing is poetical and his knowledge of his topics and love of his Island are ever evident. This book leaves the reader feeling nostalgic for a life that none of us born mid 20th century or later can ever know.

This is a beautifully written, poetic book of short stories, about life through the ages as experienced by a broad spectrum of characters who live in the Orkney islands or come into cntact with them.I feel as though I am transported there whilst reading them - the scenery, scents, the sea, the people are all so vividly portrayed. It has made me want to visit Orkney.Anyone who enjoys poetry and the sea and islands will love this book.
