This is an easy access and clear introduction to French cinema. Guy Austin, its author, is a reader in the University of Sheffield and aware of the subject that he is speaking about.

If you want to learn about the French cinema in its social, political and cultural context then you can start with this book. Then if you can read in French you would perhaps read "Histoire du cinéma français" by Jean-Pierre Jeancolas which is again an easy access introduction and finally you may be tempted to read a bigger book although again easy reading such as "French Cinema: From Its Beginnings to the Present" by Remi Fournier Lanzoni.

I had heard about 3 years ago that Prof. Austin was going to update this book, I don't know if he has done that or not yet. If he has, so please try the new one, otherwise this one is still very good.
