A good starter for those with little or no knowledge.
on 18 February 2013
Speaking as a single man who enjoys creating a more than decent meal, I am always using both the microwave and slow cooker in addition to the traditional oven and hotplate. The way in which I use the slow cooker, however, continues to be a test of trial and error - with successes and failures along the way. It was while browsing through some books at a boot fair that I came across this item and was able to use one of the recipes that evening. It just so happened I had purchased a trout earlier that day and this book gave me new ideas for using the slow-cooker which I had, hitherto, confined to chicken and stew and those items which benefit from a long, slow cook. Ready in 2 hours, my trout was perfect - and I now look forward to trying other recipes.
The book is a small paperback about the size of a small novel. What very few illustrations exists are confined to some black and white drawings that might easily be described as scribbles none of which add anything to either the book or any particular dish. In addition, the recipe information is minimal - although this can be useful when you do not want to follow a recipe exactly. Each recipe commences on a new page and most do not fill that page, indeed some only fill a half page. Nevertheless, there are about 100 recipes which cover the following categories; Soup, Meat, Poultry & Game, Fish, Vegetables, Puddings and finally Assorted Extras. In short, a basic grounding into most subjects.
On the `up' side, therefore, if you are unaware of the scope of cooking provided by your slow cooker, this book will awaken a whole new area of expertise in your culinary skills and, by making more use of the item, you even stand to free-up vital oven and hotplate space as you prepare and cook other elements of the meal. On the `down' side, if you already consult a more comprehensive work on the subject, you will find little of value here.
In summary, the information provided on every aspect of cooking with a slow cooker is the bare minimum - and that includes recipe details. Great for those who know nothing but of no use to those whose knowledge is already further ahead when it comes to using this piece of kitchen equipment.
