The book itself is fine - nicely produced and full of information. The reason for the one-star review is to advise potential purchasers that most of the content has been directly copied from an earlier publication "The Plantfinder's Guide to Garden Ferns" by the same author.

Having obtained both, I would say that this edition is *very* slightly more pictorial and contains ideas for "garden designs with ferns" which the earlier book omits. However, the earlier book is more comprehensive in coverage of species, and available (used) in hardback format for less than this.

Having both I would strongly advise potential buyers to seek out a used copy of the earlier book.

There are other books on ferns, but you can't get more up-to-date than this, nor can you argue with the author's vast and highly professional experience and global credentials. If you're a fern freak, there's no better reference and guide.

Ferns have been a passion of mine since I first started Gardening in the serious sense about 20 Years ago.

There is nothing that Martin Rickard does not know about ferns.

To me that phrase "We are not worthy", as in I am not actualy worthy, fits this bible of Greenery.

I am still scratching around in the dark trying to get to grips with the basics of the World of Botanical Latin, whereas Mr Rickard is always an erudite consumate proffesional.

Get this book and you cannot go wrong.

I spent 2 years getting a Diploma in Horticulture and believe me, I still know nothing in comparison to Mr Rickard.

Mr Rickard is one in a long line of dedicated experts who spread their knowledge with an ease us humble students can only dream of.

Got to admit I covet his cast iron (or is it alluminium) bench with affine repetition to die for.

God bless you Sir.

Where Barbara Joe Hoshizaki's book on ferns lacks in the way of colour illustrations, Martin Rickard's book scores points. His knowledge of ferns and fern growing in the UK is especially useful. It still doesn't quite answer all my 'need to knows' as a new fern gardener, as the colour illustrations show only a limited selection are rather small. There seems to be hundreds of very similar fern varieties that I still find confusing...but I'm getting there.

I found this book a bit thin in content and in substance, the cover is so bendy, it might as well be a magazine. It was not what I was expecting at all. Some of the very few pictures are so small that you can hardly see what is on them. For the price 12.95 I found that it was just not worth the money. I have loved ferns for a long time and thought I would start to get a bit more in to them, but to be honest I feel a bit ripped off with this book.

Bought as a present for my partner who is a very keen gardener and a fern fanatic. She loved it.
