5.0 out of 5 stars Lavishly illustrated guide to 1000 European species, 30 Nov 2005

This review is from: The Encyclopedia of Fungi of Britain and Europe (Hardcover)
This guide is on a par with the older Roger Phillips "Mushrooms" and very similar in size and format. Unlike Phillips, all photographs have been shot in situ. With so few guides to fungi available, and each covering a particular selection, it's best to assemble a good library - and this should be one of the major works. Even though the focus is Europe, many of the fungi have much wider ranges and this book is invaluable elsewhere in the world too (I use it regularly in temperate and tropical America).

4.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive but flawed, 29 Sep 2007
This review is from: The Encyclopedia of Fungi of Britain and Europe (Hardcover)
This is perhaps the most comprehensive popular guide in the English language. It covers a huge number of species, and has useful descriptions for each. Where it is let down is the quality of the photos. Quite often the lighting is too harsh, which has led to burnt out highlights and deep shadows. (A portable diffuser screen would have helped.) There are a few probable errors, though that is to be expected in such a large work. For example the photo illustrating Bitter Boletes includes what looks like a Penny Bun. If you want a comprehensive guide, then get Mushrooms by Phillips, or Fungi by Evans and Kibby. If you want more detail, then get Fungi of Switzerland, or even better the Fungi of Northern Europe series which are written by mycologists. I have a copy of this book, along with many other popular works, which I picked up at bargain book shops!
