This review is from: Letters to John and Jude (Daily Study Bible) (Paperback)
This is a good commentary because it speaks about the first thrill of enthusiasm that comes in the early stages of being a Christian which eventually pass away. The flame of devotion that inspired the first and second generation of Christians was now passing away because they were dying off. Christianity was becoming a tradition, and the wonder of first love was lost. It's like when people are born into a Christian family and become Anglicans by tradition rather than personal conviction. Everything is a habit rather than a heart felt way of life. This is what Christianity was becoming when John wrote his letters towards the end of the first century.

The commentary explores the false teachers 'who went out from us but they were not of us.' Does that mean if you leave a church you were never part of that congregation anyway, especially if there is no sending off ceremony?

One of the things that this commentary clears up is what it means to walk in the light. If any man who has been blessed with a job, a house and disposable income does not help his brother who is unemployed, renting and poor, then the love of God does not dwell in that person. To walk in the light is to help your brother who is in need. To walk in the dark is to have sufficient means to enjoy life, but withhold sharing that blessing with those who are in need. To love your fellow brother, not matter what his socio-economic background is, is to walk in the light.

5.0 out of 5 stars A life-Changing Book, 17 Sep 2011

This review is from: Letters to John and Jude (Daily Study Bible) (Paperback)
Its difficult to do justice to the Bible commentaries of William Barclay - they are so good. Part of the "Daily Study Bible" series, this volume is no exception. It covers the three epistles of John and the letter of Jude. In addition to an introduction to each letter, it consists of Barclay's own translation of a passage, followed by a commentary on that passage. And the commentaries are magnificant - inspired, interesting, illuminating, down-to-earth, and helpful. The mans's love of Scripture and of Christianity shines through every word. This is a genuinely life-changing book. Buy it, read it - you will never regret it.
