4.0 out of 5 stars Probably essential, 14 Jan 2012

This review is from: Common Worship: Daily Prayer (Common Worship: Services and Prayers for the Church of England) (Imitation Leather)
All clergy in the C of E have to "say" some form of Morning and Evening Prayer every day, no excuses, unless there is a life-or-death emergency. This leaves a lot of scope, but most clergy want to use an official form in the knowledge that they are part of the prayer of the church which is constantly being offered world-wide. Some use the Liturgy of the Hours, which you can also get on the Internet or downloaded to a Kindle or your phone. Others use either the Book of Common Prayer or Common Worship Daily Prayer. Again, both of these are available on the C of E's website, and there are Android downloads, too, but you might still want a book. The advantage of using the Internet or downloaded apps is that the entire service, including readings and collects, is compiled for you, avoiding tiresome looking-up of all the variants. You might, however, still want a printed book.

The book has offices for "ordinary time" as well as for seasons. It includes all 150 psalms and collects, both for Sundays and saints' days. If you depart from the laid-down service, you'll need the provided ribbons as it can become a bit of a paper-chase. If you're not clergy and don't want to do both Morning and Evening Prayer, you can choose to use a single form called Prayer During the Day. The book also has Night Prayer (Compline). The lectionary isn't included, so you'll have to buy one each year - if you wish to follow through the Church's reading scheme, that is: you can use any scheme if you want. You'll still need a Bible alongside it. So, your "kit" would be: this book, a lectionary (or reading scheme) and a Bible.

If you like traditional language, this book isn't for you. There isn't beauty in the English used, but it is difficult to do so with modern English which is more commercial than what Shakespeare, Cranmer and their contemporaries were blessed with. The collects are mostly BCP ones that have been altered where essential to contemporary language, and an attempt has thus been made to retain the tradition.

This review is from: Common Worship: Daily Prayer (Common Worship: Services and Prayers for the Church of England) (Imitation Leather)
I have a hard bound volume of Common Worship: Daily Prayer, but prefer this leather bound version with the title embossed on the front cover. I like the feel of a leather bound book in my hands, particularly when praying the Daily Office. It's a sensual experience-the leather binding, not my prayer time. This particular volume of Common Worship contains only the modern language version of the Daily Office, not the "official" 1662 Prayer Book. This book is official too. The General Synod of the Church of England approved this version, without the consent of Parliament. Only Parliament, (by British law), can amend or make alterations in the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. This daily prayer book provides not only for Morning and Evening Prayer, but also for Prayer During the Day, as well as Compline, (night prayer). Additional intercessions, canticles, and collects are included. Common Worship: Daily Prayer also provides seasonal, (liturgical), variations of the various prayer forms. It is a handsome book and a delight to hold. Of course, the prayer book is meant to help one pray, not just sit on a shelf collecting dust.
