5.0 out of 5 stars giant in every sense of the word, 15 May 2006
I'll try keep this short. This book is an absolute dream. Its the first Autobiograpy I've read(or started to read) that has engulfed all my senses.I saw this advertised in a magazine and thought why not.It arrived and alone the size of the packet was an indication of what to expect. The book is giant in every sense of the word.It contains many examples of Warhols works including many that most of us are completely unaware of.Its orgainsed and written like a film documentary in Hard Copy. Many people might try to pidgeon hole it in the so called "coffee table" category but its much more than this.If you do want a very special coffee table book on Warhol then this is the one for you.If you want a good read on Warhol then this is also for you.The only disadvantage is that if you want to read it in bed its a bit too heavy"Giant".

It measures 17" x 13" x 2.25" and weighs over 4 pounds. Its not one to have on your lap for any length of time.

This is an amazing value for money book. It chronicles warhols life from birth to his death in a concise bibliographical context. There is a mass of colour photographs on each page. One need not purchase other books about his work, this has everything. Highly recommended for proffessionals and students alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, vast and colourful tribute to a great 20th century artist., 16 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Andy Warhol ''Giant'' Size: Large Format (Hardcover)
This huge book is over 620 pages, and a heavy hardcover, (and this is the smaller version than the one that was released in 2006). In any case, you are most likely getting everything here that appeared in the larger version, and at a very affordable price . As you will see throughout this book, the artwork of Andy Warhol dominates, but there are also many additional details from his life, such as his 1928 birth certificate, and an August 1948 $20.00 prize from the Carnegie Institute of Technology. Letters, postcards, restaurant menus, press photographs etc, all add to the full picture.

In 1948, Andy Warhol produced his very first commercial illustration, which is here too. His early line drawings are shown, as well as mementos from a 1956 trip to Europe and Asia. As early as 1957, his distinctive style is starting to become evident, as in a line drawing "Standing Male Torso."
There is a polite letter of rejection from the Museum of Modern Art in New York, dated 1956, after he had submitted a drawing of a shoe, but by 1960 he was earning royalties from MOMA for cards he was selling through the museum.

By 1961, we see images of Superman and Dick Tracy, and his trademark screenprint repeated images appear in 1962, of the iconic Campbells soup cans, and of Warren Beatty, Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley. Marlon Brando, Elizabeth Taylor, and Jackie Kennedy all caught his attention around this time.
The Death and Disaster series followed, with images of the electric chair, air disaster, poisoning victims, suicide, and car accident victims. The films that appeared towards the end of the 60s also feature, with Joe Dallesandro and others of the Warhol crowd seen here in stills from the movies, and candid or posed shots of the whole "Factory" scene, with its sleazy side not glossed over here.
The 1968 shooting of Andy Warhol is mentioned, and then on to Interview magazine, with stars such as Jodi Foster and Debbie Harry on the cover. Far too many names to mention here, but Warhol was seen with, and portrayed countless famous people around this era. The chapter "Polaroids and Portraits" extends from 1970 to 1986. Faces were a huge part of the Warhol body of work, including everyone from Nixon, to Mao, to John Lennon, and Grace Jones.
Also shown are images of Cow wallpaper, the Velvet Underground record sleeve, nude body parts, skulls, guns, and anything that caught the attention of Andy Warhol.
Andy Warhol died on 22nd February 1987, and left a huge body of work. This book certainly has examples of all the well-known artworks, as well as many rarely seen. Colour reproduction and clarity throughout, is flawless. It would be quite a task to compile a better look back at not only the art of Andy Warhol, but also the strange world, complete with its dark side, that seemed to surround him. Highly recommended.

An incredible book. Page after page after page of Andy's paintings & drawings, plus LOTS of photographs & related ephemera, all reproduced on lovely glossy stock. If you're a Warhol fanatic, or just have a passing interest in his work, then this book is "The One". I bought it as a gift for a friend & ended up keeping it myself, it's SO good!

This review is from: Andy Warhol ''Giant'' Size: Large Format (Hardcover)
Since I saw the original GIANT book I really wanted to have it, but the size which is about A3 maybe even bigger and the high price 60 pound kept me from getting it.
Now this smaller edition came out, it a good size A4 The pictures look still great even if they are a little smaller,
I love this version and it is still a HB
Nerver saw so many pictures of Andy in one book.

Amazing Heavyweight book, in my eye Warhol epitomises the modern art world of his time and a little of now in modern day ,an eye opener and interesting selection of art, glad I bought it, I know know a little more of the mind of the man himself and can percive a small amount of his influence on the modern world.

A great "centerpiece" in your bookshelf.

For me, the book is very interesting and features some "new" material from the early days of Warhol, and lots and lots of rare pictures
A must for Warholers.
