5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Abstract Expressionist text book or coffee table read.
I have many art books in my collection, but had nothing on Abstract Expressionism. Currently in the process of writing my dissertation and I wanted a book that would do everything, good images with descriptions, a plotted history, plus relevant text's. 3.0 out of 5 stars Probably better for dipping into
Comprehensive and well illustrated, but a little wordy. Probably better for dipping into, rather than reading from cover to cover, as I did.

I have many art books in my collection, but had nothing on Abstract Expressionism. Currently in the process of writing my dissertation and I wanted a book that would do everything, good images with descriptions, a plotted history, plus relevant text's. This book had everything, plus each important time period was broken down, and there was a section in the back called documents, which is full of key articles by prolific writers supporting this movement/ism/genre. It saved me getting several books out of the library as it was such a comprehensive guide. This book was a life line, and the bonus is I know I will enjoy it for years to come.

Its a very good price for a very beautiful book.

This review is from: Abstract Expressionism (Themes and movements) (Hardcover)
For anyone interested in this art movement, this book is a welcome survey. It is comprehensive in its coverage of artists ( a fair number of whom I hadn't come across before, even though I've been interested in the topic for years), offers a chronological account of the movement's development (which, again, I can't recollect finding elsewhere), makes available a lot of excellent colour reproductions of the paintings and sculpture and, lastly but certainly not least, supplies the texts of a thorough sample of critical responses to the movement, and artists' statements, from its beginnings until the last decade. The last I find particularly useful: I teach in this area, and nothing is more useful than to have the hard evidence of what the artists concerned actually said about their work, and what the critics said (because the critical responses vary considerably as the decades pass, which is extremely interesting in itself). All in all, I thoroughly recommend the book, even at the £33.75 price, I do think it's worth it. Also, MOMA in New York have an app for iPad on Abstract Expressionism which is an excellent thumbnail account: have a look.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best yet, 4 Jan. 2012
This review is from: Abstract Expressionism (Themes and movements) (Hardcover)
This surely must be the best general review of abstract expressionism yet published. Beautifully produced with excellent reproductions it has a balanced introductory essay, really helpful annotations to each picture and a wonderful 'Documents' section, which brings together significant writings by and about abstract expressionists. In as book like this everyone will have a view about inclusions and exclusions; great to see Hans Hoffman given his due but Helen Frankenthaler is ignored. Congratulations to Katy Seigal the editor and to Phaidon Press. Last year MOMA had a great 'Abstract Expressionism New York' show but shamed themselves by not producing a catalogue; this could have been it.
