This beautifully presented book explores Lewis Carroll's lesser-known hobby: photography. Although it's a bit on the pricey side it's worth it if you are a fan of anything Carroll. The book's dust jacket was badly damaged - Amazon UK doesn't shrinkwrap the book to a sheet of cardboard as does Amazon USA. otherwise the book was ok although I always hate to see "printed in China".

This review is from: Lewis Carroll (55s) (Hardcover)
This beautifully presented book explores Lewis Carroll's lesser-known hobby: photography. Although it's a bit on the pricey side it's worth it if you are a fan of anything Carroll. Phaidon have a reputation for producing high-quality art books and this is no exception -- it is made to resemble a photo album with its diagonal page corners and dark blue cover. There are 56 plates in total arranged chronologically, showing Carroll's development as a photographer and that, despite his duties as an Oxford mathematics lecturer and a highly successful author, he was still able to produce such beautiful artistic works in his spare time. The book showcases him as a pioneer of the Victorian development of photography.

A nice little touch is that beneath many of the photographs are the signatures of the sitters, and the plates themselves are sharp and clear -- I wouldn't be surprised if Phaidon has chosen to reproduce the pictures as the same size as the originals, and if this is so then they show an incredible amount of detail even though they are about 150 years old! The book has an informative introduction explaining the history of Carroll's hobby and each picture is accompanied by a paragraph analysing the composition, the lighting, et cetera.

Overall a great book, I recommend it!
