4.0 out of 5 stars A range of insights into an important artist, 7 May 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Doris Salcedo (Contemporary Artists Series) (Paperback)
As with all art monographs, it is hard not to value and appreciate their insights and information when one already highly rates the work of the artist, so any positive comments are undoubtedly founded in the fact that I think Doris Salcedo to be a fantastic artist. However, this book is invaluable for a number of reasons. Firstly. it provides a full-scale survey of her works up till 2000 and provides good pictures of all of these works from a range of angles and with varying degrees of detail. Since Salcedo is mainly an installation and sculptural artist the full impression of her work is obviously impossible to recreate, but the photographs taken at the time of the installations do manage to give a strong impression of what they were like. Secondly, through interviews, several well-written essays and the artists own choice of supplementary texts, we are given fascinating background to her ideas, her creative process and the contexts in which her art can be understood. These contexts range from contemporary art and cultural theory to the specificity of violence in Colombia to a more general echo of universal oppression in parallels with the Holocaust and the artwork that has come out of that, most specifically the poetry of Paul Celan. The artworks have strong emotional power and this book expands on that by revealing the wider resonances behind the work.
