4.0 out of 5 stars Very good to learn about this key artist, 9 April 2012
This review is from: Courbet (Art & Ideas) (Paperback)
This book is a very good introduction for every reader who wants to know more about Gustave Courbet.

As Rubin acknowledges himself in the introduction, this book is aimed at a broad audience, and therefore does not feature any notes. However, there is a bibliography and other sources are mentioned along the flow of the text.

Abundantly illustrated like all other books of this 'Art&Ideas' series, this book reads really well, with a good balance of visual analysis of artworks, biographical elements and contextual information to understand the artist in his time.

1. The Desperate Man: Identity Crisis in Bohemian Paris, 7
2. Gutter Art: The Stonebreakers and Political Upheaval, 49
3. Down-to-Earth Death: Realism Defined by A Burial at Ornans, 73
4. Mirrors of the People: Realist Series and Meeting Independence, 101
5. Autobiography and Social Vision: World Prophecy from the Studio, 133
6. Realism as Language and Attitude: A Manifesto and its Contexts, 155
7. Manhood and Women: Models and Mistresses, Prostitutes and Wives, 175
8. Truth to Nature and to Home: The Outdoors and its Consumers, 217
9. Courbet Non Grata: The Vendôme Column, Prison and Exile, 269
