4.0 out of 5 stars Packed with information, 7 Dec. 2011
By
This review is from: Islamic Arts (Art & Ideas) (Paperback)
The authors have organized their material mainly chronologically, from 600 to 1800. Within this time frame, three distinct parts deal with the periods 600-900, 900-1500, and 1500-1800.

Within each part, the discussion is thematic, focused on different types of art: architecture, 'the arts of the book', 'the arts of the loom', and 'the decorative arts'.

The book is abundantly illustrated in full colours and the text is double-spaced so it does not feel overwhelming. It is nonetheless densely packed with information, descriptive elements about the figures, and contextual elements to understand the broader picture.

There is also a glossary, a detail of major dynasties, key dates, and further reading suggested at the end of the volume.

Extremely useful.

I can not recommend this general survey of the art and architecture of the Islamic world highly enough. An art book that sets out genuinely to inform and to provide an initial orientation to a vast area of culture.
