Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a really beautiful collection of the works of the French painter James Tissot.
It's a large scale book, 14" x 11" approx., a little thin - there are only 40 plates - but each is full-page, full-colour and the quality of the reproduction is excellent. There is a brief biographical essay with a smattering of additional illustrations and each plate has a descriptive note on the facing page.

While the Impressionists were painting modern life in what was then considered an avant-garde painting style, artists like Tissot - realist-inspired painters, undoubtedly influenced by photography - were also painting modern life, albeit in Tissot`s case that of the affluent, upper-middle class. Tissot`s paintings of London society are beautifully rendered depictions of the glittering milieu of the place and period, often provoking speculation in the viewer (Is that old man really her husband? Which sister is the young man interested in?) the kind of themes that can make Victorian painting look trivial in the case of lesser artists - but not Tissot.
Ruskin didn't like his work; but Ruskin - infamously - didn't like Whistler either; even Ruskin's supporters surely have to admit he was often a few colours short of a working palette in some of his judgements.

It's a real shame this book is out of print; one can only hope it will re-appear sometime. Meanwhile, DO consider the Amazon market sellers for this second-hand; a hardback copy in good condition is certainly worth obtaining, this is a fine volume to have in your art library.
