Quite why woodwind Andy Mackay from Roxy Music should have written on electronic music is not immediately obvious, but what a pleasure that he has. This is an erudite, indeed scholarly, overview of the development of electronic instruments, the music produced & the musicians who have created it. The tone is serious & technical. Centrestage is the avantgarde, with pop & disco only briefly covered. More John Cage, less Giorgio Moroder. The presentation is conservative, with many b&w pix of beglassed nerdy types considering the middle distance.
Mackay's writing style is direct & clear, tackling difficult areas of electronics & conceptual avantgarde thinking with ease.
Amongst all else, this highlights the extraordinary gathering together of talent which was Roxy.
