The author has captured the essence of the lives of not only scribes and illuminators but gives an insight into the work of the parchment maker, ink making and others. Highly recommended.

This book is a great introduction to the production of manuscripts in the Middle Ages. While the book is short, the text is informative but clear and very readable, and the many pictures make it an enjoyable read. The perfect place to start learning about manuscripts and their makers.

This book is not very big, but it is very well written and full of information. It describes in detail the circumstances under which scribes and illuminators worked in the middle ages. It contains full colour pictures of authentic objects, etc. that support the textual descriptions. I easily recommend it as Reference literature to all those truly interested in handwritten manuscripts and medieval illumination.

This is not a very big book, in terms of size or number of pages. But it is inexpensive.

It is more about the practicalities of the whole area of book making: ink making, paper making, book binding, and techniques used for copying elaborate designs.

It isn't about calligraphy or drawing styles.

Good as an introduction to the topic.

Bought to compliment my Medieval Manuscript course and was not disappointed. Having ordered from Amazon and unavailable, I bought from an Amazon seller. Book was in excellent condition and full of interest. Christopher de Hamel is well known in Palaeography circles. Excellent book.
