5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and concise overview, 24 Sep 2009

This review is from: Scribes and Illuminators (Medieval Craftsmen) (Paperback)
This book is a great introduction to the production of manuscripts in the Middle Ages. While the book is short, the text is informative but clear and very readable, and the many pictures make it an enjoyable read. The perfect place to start learning about manuscripts and their makers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Really Informative Little Book!!, 3 Dec 2002
This review is from: Scribes and Illuminators (Medieval Craftsmen) (Paperback)
This book is not very big, but it is very well written and full of information. It describes in detail the circumstances under which scribes and illuminators worked in the middle ages. It contains full colour pictures of authentic objects, etc. that support the textual descriptions. I easily recommend it as Reference literature to all those truly interested in handwritten manuscripts and medieval illumination.

5.0 out of 5 stars Medieval Craftsmen, 11 Aug 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Scribes and Illuminators (Medieval Craftsmen) (Paperback)
A highly detailed account of every aspect of the skills involved in making books in the medieval period with emphasis on illuminated manuscripts. The book contains three chapters: Paper-and parchment-Makers, Ink-Makers and Scribes and Illuminators, Binders and Booksellers. The author informs the reader of the materials used in creating books. For example, it was surprising to learn that parchment was initially made from animal skins. Readers are then informed about the different types of ink and quills used for the writing which was highly ornate. In addition there are thirty-five colour and twenty-eight black and white illustrations throughout. The book is short with seventy-two pages including the glossary, further reading, acknowledgements and index. However, it is an abundance of information and a pleasantly decorated book throughout. The author, Christopher de Hamel is head of the Illuminated Manuscript Department at Sotheby's. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice but short book, 30 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Scribes and Illuminators (Medieval Craftsmen) (Paperback)
This is not a very big book, in terms of size or number of pages. But it is inexpensive.

It is more about the practicalities of the whole area of book making: ink making, paper making, book binding, and techniques used for copying elaborate designs.

It isn't about calligraphy or drawing styles.

Good as an introduction to the topic.
