5.0 out of 5 stars superbly readable, scholarly and well informed, 10 Mar 2000
By A Customer
I have nothing but praise for Morna Hooker's commentary. In a very readable work she manages a detailed and highly sensible textual analysis, without losing the broader picture. She has the rare ability to give the reader a good grasp of theological themes at the same time as discussing the original Greek words used. As a student of theology I found this commentary tremendously useful, and I would highly recommend it to anyone involved in the scholarly study of Mark's gospel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to Mark for Religious Studies students, 30 Mar 2000
By A Customer
Morna Hooker's analysis is an extremely thorough study of almost every single facet of Mark's original gospel. She backs up every point she makes with a plethora of Old Testament references, invaluable when writing gobbets. The only thing stopping her from achieving 5 stars is that her text is at times rather inaccessible or dense, and so this book is really only for advanced students. It probably goes without saying, but it is not a novel - it is a study aid.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hooker on Mark, 7 Feb 2009

(REAL NAME)
Sufficiently setailed for scholarly or lay use. No jargon, well within orthodox tradition, with helpful background relating it to its time, and other literature of the day.
Nineham was - maybe still is - the standard Mark commentary: this one bids well either to succeed, or amplify it. And that is real praise.

5.0 out of 5 stars A scholarly but approachable Mark, 12 Dec 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Morna Hooker is a theologian who is clearly very learned, but for the student manages to write with clarity and conviction. An excellent - though challenging - book for any student's or preacher's bookshelf

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative and readable, 24 Oct 2011
This review is from: Gospel According to St.Mark (Black's New Testament Commentaries) (Paperback)
Morna Hooker's commentary is sufficiently detailed for those looking for a decent in-depth study, yet sufficiently readable for those with a passing interest. Well written, well researched - I'd definitely recommend that you have this one in your library.
