5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for all chess lovers, 11 Sept. 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Tony Miles - It's Only Me: England's First Chess Grandmaster (Batsford Chess Books) (Paperback)
There are many sorts of games collections out there, some with dry, technical annotations, some with 'variation spaghetti' and dense notes, but very few that read as well as this one. It is in fact much more than a games collection, and as such will interest anyone who simply loves chess. If you don't know much about Tony Miles you'll be glad you decided to read this one for many reasons; firstly, interesting and unusual games, of a high standard and often against world-class opposition. Secondly, Tony's annotations evoke a clear picture of the scene at the board and are often downright funny - I can't think of another chess book where the author had me laughing out loud - and finally, for me, there are so many things in this book about the chess 'scene' that I found interesting that it deserves to be widely read and enjoyed. There are plenty of games here featuring unusual openings, of course - Miles had a penchant for them - but there are also plenty of other aspects of the game that are covered just as well - much for the endgame fan, too. In addition to the games are some of Miles' other writing, chess articles and book reviews and the like. All in all this seems to be a fitting tribute to a player who is sadly no longer with us. And it's a fine read in every other respect, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book worthy of the man?, 2 May 2005

This review is from: Tony Miles - It's Only Me: England's First Chess Grandmaster (Batsford Chess Books) (Paperback)
Oh yes.
Tony's games, annotations and articles have been well-known and regarded highly for a long time, but this truly is the book that he would and should have written himself, if not for his tragic untimely death. Filled with his humour, special insight and, just as importantly, many games which deserve to go down in history - the book is a worthy testament to a man admired by all and loved by a vast majority of the chess world. From his thoughts of his victory against Karpov with 1...a6!?, to his review of Eric Schiller's "Unorthodox Openings", the book elicits laughter, joy and, in some senses, sorrow that we will see no more from the legend, the genius and the enigma which is Tony Miles.
