This review is from: The Wisdom Of The Wyrd: Teachings For Today From Our Ancient Past: Teachings from Our Tribal Ancestors (Paperback)
What a wonderful, readable and - in the best way possible - "scholarly" work uncovering the hidden shamanic traditions of Anglo-Saxon England, which survived in folk traditions up to the present day. Bates is a wise enthusiast and sensitive to the spiritual nuances of what he has researched.
The profound wisdom of the Anglo-Saxon world is worth integrating into the modern world, and if you have even a passing interest in shamanism or new age practices, and live in England, then get acquainted with the book. You will not be disappointed at all.
This book should not be confused with the Way of the Wyrd, Bates earlier book- now sadly out of print - chronicalling the apprenticeship of a young christian monk to an Anglo-Saxon shaman, which is vividly rendered a la Castenada.

This review is from: The Wisdom Of The Wyrd: Teachings For Today From Our Ancient Past: Teachings from Our Tribal Ancestors (Paperback)
A book written for the folk interested in pre Christian Anglo Saxon England, however, I would recommend this book to anyone from any background. Reason, there is a message in this book from the past that is so relevant for todays world of confusion and madness.

5.0 out of 5 stars An extraordinary journey into the world of the Wyrd, 22 Sep 1999

This review is from: The Wisdom Of The Wyrd: Teachings For Today From Our Ancient Past: Teachings from Our Tribal Ancestors (Paperback)
Brian Bates trasnports the reader into a world of shamanic history, cloaked in the guise of a fictitious shaman by the name of Wolf. Bran, a christian scribe in ancient Britian, is sent to report on the secrets of the Wyrd, where he studies for a time under Wolf. During this time he learns of the Runes, the healing techniques and of the spirits understood by our ancesters. In essence, we are reminded of the experiences of Castaneda but with a more Celtic flavour. Both myself and anybody else I have spoken to, who have read this book, could not but help being projected into our distant and mystical past.
