There are quite a few books like this - advice on growing crops and then recipes to use them. Many tend to be full of pictures - nice maybe, but I know what a good aubergine should look like and I would rather have words. This is a wordy book and all the better for it.

So some straightforward advice - based on her own direct experience - of what works and doesn't work in the vegetable garden or allotment is matched with some good practical recipes. I always check these sort of books by looking at fennel and courgette recipes - since I always have too many and need new recipes. Lynda Brown does well: eight fennel (including three new to me) and nine courgette (three new to me again.

I haven't cooked extensively from the book yet - but the three recipes I have tried were clear and understandable - and, above all, worked.

So - strongly recommended for the practical cook - even if you don't need the growing advice.
