4.0 out of 5 stars Didn't everyone start with A Tune a Day?, 16 May 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: A Tune a Day for the French Horn: Book 1 (Paperback)
11 years ago I started playing French horn. About a week later the Tune a Day book was dropped on the music stand by my teacher. And there it REALLY started. The Tune a Day does contain everything it takes to get going on the horn... except a teacher. A responsive human teacher is almost essential when learning the horn, because there are so many techniques to consider. Having said that, if a teacher is not a financially viable option, the Tune a Day book is your best shot. It separates the learning process into discrete lessons, which is important to establish the basics of embouchure and technique. It does contain melodies to practice at all opportunities, although some of these are very dull and dry. The duets included are good fun to play, however, and act as an introduction to the joys of group music for the learner. There are other books with tunes that are more rewarding to play; however, they are beyond the standard of the ABSOLUTE BEGINNER. The book is good to start with, but will soon be outgrown by a fast-progressing student. In conclusion, I would have to say that this book is the best of the French horn tutor books. However, a tutor book is not a real substitute for a real live human teacher!

I bought this book for a young learner who could already produce a good sound but needed to build an embouchere. This is a good starter guide.
