Useful for finding the right plant for that odd or difficult corner. But with all books, I'd recommend you get it from your public library first to see if it suits you before shelling out.

I'm really disappointed with the quality of photography in this book. The images are flat in contrast dull in composition and inconsistent in quality throughout the book. These dream plants seem to have been photographed by the publishers receptionist using a compact camera. Shame on you for spoiling what could have been a beautiful book.

im surprised there is so much praise for this book as i had it and didnt think it was anything exceptional. its just a reference book listing of plants with occasionally their own experiences/opinion of growing it, nearly all this info and more can be found online now and i didnt find much that i hadnt seen before.

another negative is they go to the level of detail of species but usually not to cultivars which isnt helpful and i felt the book was slightly outdated as its missed some of the best cultivar introductions since it was written.

finally i found it slightly hypocritical/contradictory in places to their own practice as they discourage from using some plants(achillea for example) which oudolf uses himself in his planting plans.

i used the book as a secondary check after i had searched for info online, its worth it for that and should be priced about £7-8. i feel the price and praise for this book have been blown out of all proportion by oudolf mania and i definitely wouldn't pay £25 for it.

This is a terrific book, written by two highly respected authors and plantsmen. 1200 plants are included and are described in a unique, frank and highly entertaining way. The advice is accessible and interesting. This is a wonderful book that should find pride of place on any plantsman or woman's bookshelf and be of use for many years. Anyone who grows perennials should have this book. The only minor negative is that some of the photographs are not good enough for a book of this standard. Admirable.

Brilliant section on tough plants which is worth the purchase price alone. Oudolf is a pioneer and I am happy to follow his advice.
