This review is from: Shore to Summit: A Photographic Guide to the Geology of Britain and Ireland (Hardcover)
The author (a well know landscape photographer) was not too impressed with some of the pictures in the Geology books she had been using to help her understanding of the way our landscape is formed.

This gorgeous book is the result... a cornucopia of brilliant atmospheric photographs of some of the most beautiful and inspiring places (of geological interest) in the British Isles - plus some useful and helpful essays on the various and many different geological eras that we find in the UK.

Each photograph picks out a specific type of rock, or a particular way that the strata has been formed, and links these to a map of the UK, which includes a diagram of the way that geological time flows from the north-west of Scotland to the south-east of Kent (almost as if the UK has been rotated through 90 degrees).

I have been using the excellent The Geology of Britain in my own exploration of this fascinating topic - and this wonderful picture book is the perfect companion.

This was bought for a senior geologist and he was delighted. The level of information was pitched perfectly and the glorious pictures are marvellous. Having said this, the book is not too detailed. It is ideal for anyone who is interested in the British Landscape and would like to know a little more about the rocks.

Did you ever wonder where to find those great views and rock exposures that make a field trip unforgettable? This book will give you lots of ideas and is easy to use because of its unusual chronological format.

I enjoyed the combination of geology facts with local folklore, etc. A pleasant read without becoming too technical and the photographs are superb as expected.

The only downsides to this book are the numbers on a map of the British Isles near the front which are location reference to the photographs/pages are very difficult to read and the fact that the pages are not lay flat (A pet hate of mine!). Most annoying when you're looking at photographs which span two pages. These are just minor niggles as the quality of the book is otherwise very good.

beautifully balanced book, giving pleasure to anyone interested in our landscapes or in the rocks that fashioned them. Where the geology is worth studying the scenery is always attractive, right across the British Isles, as this book shows.

Linking photos with the description of geomorphology is generally very well done and gives the beginner a good insight, encouraging a new view of landscapes; well worth a purchase for those with such interests, whether novice or more expert.
