5.0 out of 5 stars A book to treasure - 60 historic churches, 12 May 2013

A few years ago, on the recommendation of a friend, I rented a car and spent a few days driving around East Anglia. That is how I discovered the rural churches of Norfolk - their quiet serenity, their medieval foibles, their sense of welcome - a serene experience that will live with me always. But what I so wanted was an illustrated book that conveyed the encounter of approaching the church in the countryside, crossing through fields of poppies, and the silent joy of sitting inside, broken only by birdsong from the eaves.

This is the book/souvenir I hungered after, a marvellous work which conveys the human experience of encountering those small ancient churches of East Anglia. Sixty churches are featured - all with a glossy pictorialist photograph from outside, many with additional colour shots of architectural details and historic interior features (each church also gets a short introduction by the author-photographer).

The quality of the photography and the design is high, but what I most enjoy is how the images in this book stir the reader with that special sense of quietude found in these creaky whitewashed buildings. I turn these pages (here in Australia) and it does take me back to a few very special days visiting churches and villages one summer in Norfolk.

This is a good book with plenty of beautiful photographs and interesting text on each church. I enjoyed reading it and am now starting on another book in the series about Suffolk churches.

There are hundreds of churches in Norfolk and I doubt if there is one which hasn't something to surprise and charm the visitor. Still, it's all rather bewildering to know where to start. David Stanford has selected some of the most beautiful and interesting, helping the local or traveller to narrow the field.

The churches are set out in alphabetical order, and a map helps you locate them - it's schematic, though, so you'll need a road map or, ideally, the 1:50,000 (pink, old 1") Ordnance Survey job too. Navigating around the undulating fields and lanes of Norfolk using an OS map is a deep, deep joy and you soon realise it is the church towers which are your major landmarks!

Each church has at least one cracking photograph. Stanford picks out the aspects of interest and his selection represents the best of what there is to see. Unlike Pevsner, who chops churches up into a series of heiroglyphically categorised architectural features, Stanford is alive to the building as a whole; it's proportions, its relationship to its village and its setting in the landscape are all part of its charm and the well-written, atmospheric text brings each one alive. This makes his tour a real pleasure to follow, and the book a really nice coffee-table job for when you're stuck at home on wet winter evenings. Enjoy :-{)
