Any new book on the wonderful " Western " Diesel Hydraulics is always welcome. What should be noted here for any avid fans of the class , is the fact that the great majority of photographs herein are published for the first time ~ certainly to my best knowledge. Some eminent photographers work is featured , including the authors' late father,Derek Cross.
The somewhat misleading title , given that the class only saw , at best , fifteen years service, is justified somewhat by the inclusion of post BR heritage railway photos ; and ,of course , several of D1015 's return to the main line.A good variety of locations are featured, and most ~ though not all ~ livery variations.
This compilation is let down by some errenous captioning: Page 11 ~ this photo was taken in 1963 not 1965 , and the train is the ' Cambrian Coast Express ' not as stated. The photo on page 27 , by the late great Ivo Peters is not D1071 ( no cab ventilation grill ).Also there is some assumptive captioning , example on page 51 ~ why speculate ?
However, overall this is a welcome addition to any 'Western ' fans book collection. I certainly do not regret purchasing.
