4.0 out of 5 stars A Secret World
An excellent book, full of interesting facts about the building of the Underground, the Sewage System, Brunel's "Double-Decker" Train and Passenger Tunnels under the Thames and all sorts of other goodies including the lost Rivers such as the Fleet, Tyburn and Wandle. 3.0 out of 5 stars my wife didn't enjoy the subject matter as much as she thought she would.
my wife didn't enjoy the subject matter as much as she thought she would. That's not to say that the service was poor. It was not.

An excellent book, full of interesting facts about the building of the Underground, the Sewage System, Brunel's "Double-Decker" Train and Passenger Tunnels under the Thames and all sorts of other goodies including the lost Rivers such as the Fleet, Tyburn and Wandle. Coming more up todate there are sections on closed off Tube stations, the Post Office Trains that used to run between various hub stations on the system dispersing the mail, and, in WW2 some were turned into bomb shelters and also used for military logistics planning centres. Many of London's great hotels use the disused lines as wine cellars.

All in all, an absolutely fascinating book that I would thoroughly recommend to anyone who was interested in London's diverse and unusual history. There's more going on down there than you think!

A very informative read for anyone interested in the history of London. Especially relevant if read in conjunction with Fiona's other "London" books.
