Edith Pargeter has been regrettably overlooked in recent years, being outshone by the success of her other pseudonym Ellis Peters.
This is a sensitively written book by an accomplished author, continuing the story begun in The Heaven Tree of Harry Talvace, son of the master mason Harry Talvace whose totally unjust fate and cruel death had been cause by the complex villain Ralf Isambard, Lord of the castle of Parfois. The story is set on the Welsh Borders in the early Middle Ages.
Harry seeks revenge for his murdered father and finds himself captured by his enemy and held prisoner in the castle.
The story is a rich tapestry of interlinked characters. I found myself being drawn into their lives and personalities
The whole trilogy needs to be read together. I couldn't wait to see how the story ended in the final book The Scarlet Seed

5.0 out of 5 stars Intense and rewarding, 25 Aug 2010

This review is from: The Green Branch: Number 2 in series (Heaven Tree) (Paperback)
The Green Branch is the 2nd volume of the Heaven Tree Trilogy (Vol 1 confusingly called The Heaven Tree) so do read the first one first as you need the back story. Set in the 13th century during the reign of Henry III this starts at the court of Llewelyn (the Great) in Wales and then moves back to Parfois, the scene of the first book and returns us to the strangely charismatic and compelling figure of Ralf Isambard, alone now with his beautiful church built by the first Harry Talvace, father of the Harry of this book, both friend and enemy of Isambard.

The story charts the relationship between the old warrior and the young boy who comes to him out of hatred and revenge but stays for more complex reasons. Pargeter is a brilliant writer who creates compelling and fascinating characters with real depth and isn't afraid of making them multi-dimensional so that our reactions and relationships with them change as we read. This is the sort of novel that you really want to savour - an intense, emotional and rewarding read.

I read The Heaven Tree some forty years ago and am now re-reading it.
I didn't read the rest of the trilogy so that's why I bought the book and am looking forward to reading the second in the series.
The rating is based on the first book which was so good I'm sure the standard will be maintained - well look who wrote it!

An excellent trilogy this. The story continues with young Harry Talevace, who was whisked from danger by his mother and Madonna Bernadetta as a baby. But he has a score to settle with the man who put to death his father and he means to carry it out no matter what. Unfortunately Ralf Isambard is a formidable enemy. It is hard to see which way the story will go! Love, hate, hate, love which is it???
A fantastic read, by a great historical writer. It keeps you guessing the whole way.
If you enjoy historical novels you are bound to love this, it is superb.
