This review is from: George Elgar Hicks: Painter of Victorian life (Paperback)

By Rosamond Allwood
Intro by Rosemary Treble

Comprehensive exhibition of Hicks work, with emphasis on 1850s' and 60s.

Collection of paintings formed at the Geffrye Museum over a period of years includes a number of important 19th-century 'modern life' pictures, which compliment a basic display of furniture and other decorative arts material.

With revived interest in an appreciation of Victorian painting, this is much valued for it's artistic qualities as well as its documentary interest.

A document that will be of interest not only to art historians, but to anyone who wants to know how a successful Victorian painter actually lived; as a result of research, we know what his income was, how many servants he had and what his family life was like.
