This is an excellent introduction to readers of Tolkien whose knowledge of Welsh language and culture is limited. First, it is fairly short: the text, as distinct from notes, etc., is just 116 pages. It deals with the influence of Welsh on some of Tolkien's invented languages (though I think the author slightly exaggerates the similarities between Welsh and Sindarin). There follows a good description of relevant Welsh legends and stories. An important feature is a discussion of works held in Tolkien's "Celtic library". Little of ths will be new to students of Welsh culture; the book is aimed above all at helping readers of Tolkien, an objective which I think it achieves successfully.
