This review is from: George Stubbs and the Wide Creation: Animals, People and Places in the Life of George Stubbs, 1724-1806 (Hardcover)
Apart from the excellent review of Stubbs' work, what is really good about this book is the description of the different levels of society through which Stubbs moved from the artisans of Liverpool and its surroundings to the country gentry, the sportsmen and the aristocracy. His own life was rather dull but this is more than compensated for by the extraordinary characters with whom he came in contact with whom Blake describes so well. The illustrations are good although of course one wishes for more and realises that the cost has been kept to a very reasonable figure.
