This is my first experience of Sylvia Townsend Warner's work, and I plan on reading more. Exquisite collection of stories- not only about her childhood- where an adroit turn of phrase can have you laughing out loud in one or taking you back to your own childhood in another. Recollections of holidays in Wales with a sermonizing Nannie, a fire-alarm which sounded whenever it rained, and, as an adult, organizing a home for belligerent Belgian refugees... Perhaps funniest of all is 'How I left the Navy' where the author's mother abruptly stops her daughter wearing the popular children's sailor-suit of the day, only explaining years later that the ship named on her cap had been revealed as no longer in service but an offshore hospital for sailors with venereal disease!!

Fantastic book. Witty stories, a great pleasure to read. Book in very good condition, so a good seller.
