It's hard not to smile at the description of this volume as 'an introduction....', since the material delves deep into the complexities of hoverfly identification with mainly excellent photos, key diagnostic indicators, distribution maps etc. As a beginner in the area of insect photography I found it both engaging and very helpful, but am quite happy for now to leave to others the ID of the many species which require microscopic analysis and which have been omitted from this book.

A wonderfully illustrated and comprehensive guide deserving to be a best seller to those who have Natural History as their interest.

Why would you want two guide books on hover flies? Because they are really good books. All the info is there and photos work too.

Photographs work better than illustrations for me and this is the most complete for the subject. Interesting introduction and whilst it will always be tricky if not impossible to ID some species from a photo it will do for most.
Not sure why the photographs are described as 'remarkable' on the back cover seeing as an ID book needs images of insects at rest they are your bog standard bug shots but other than that no complaints.

I have waited for a hoverflies guide book which is portable and robust enough to be used in the field, for some time .This fulfills the purpose perfectly, with a protective plastic cover, excellent descriptions, identification pointers and well taken photographs of many species. Distribution maps are included.
A thoughtfully produced guide for any naturalist to treasure.

Straightforward, well-illustrated and organised introduction to this family of flies. Highly recommended for beginners, photographers and in fact anyone with a general interest in natural history.
DON'T BUY IT HERE THOUGH - the price it's offered at is so low it completely counteracts any funds that could've been raised by the authors.

The book came on time and packaged securely. It really is a marvellous book and exceptionally written. I have a love of Hoverflies as they really fascinate me, and this book makes finding your latest HF so much easier.

If you like Hoverflies, you will love this book about them!

Comprehensive and well illustrated; an even better book than I had been expecting. Annotations on the photographs are particularly useful and better than trying to relate text to pictures (often on a different page in many books). I can really recommend this work.

Well illustrated and has detailed information on all the species included, (not all species are included but should point you in the right direction if you find something unusual). Well worth the money.
