5.0 out of 5 stars What a lovely and heart-warming book this is!, 9 Jan 2004
This is a story about how Fannie Farmer came to write down recipes with precise measurements and the friendship between Fannie and Marcia who is her employer¡存 daughter.
When I read this book the first time, I was fascinated by the illustrations; they are extremely elegant and amusing. For example, the reflections of Marcia¡存 changing moods in the oil-lamp globes and glassware on the table are very striking. One gimmick that the illustrator uses is to write up Fannie¡存 cookery hints like pictures on the wall. How brilliant this is!
Compared with the illustrations, the text is somewhat prosaic; however, by means of the plot, readers can still imagine Marcia¡存 feelings. On the other hand, Fannie¡存 kindness not only makes Marcia trust her more and more, but also arouses Marcia¡存 interest and confidence. Anyway, most of the writing is moving and effective.
As a reader, I found the book really delightful. It is worth reading again and again.
