Margaret Mead (1901-1978)was a distinguished American cultural anthropologist who came to prominence very early in her career with the publication of "Coming of Age in Samoa", which appeared in 1928, when Mead was just 27 years old. "Male and Female" was published in 1949 and offers a descriptive critique of gender from the perspective of both anthropology, which was Mead's central discipline, and psychology, which was not. To that extent the book is somewhat unsatisfactory. Add to this the fact that "Male and Female" emerged at a time when the furore over the first Kinsey Report(1948) was at its height in the United States, and that the second half of Mead's book addresses gender relations in contemporary America, that is, the late 1940's, it becomes clear that its preoccupations very much reflect its time. The book seems now very dated.

None the less, it remains a valuable work, largely perhaps because it can now be seen as significant contribution to popular debate concerning gender and gender stereotyping in the United States in the 1950's and, as a result of successive editions and reprints, well into the 1960's. Mead is a major figure in the feminist movement of her time, and her popularity as a writer and her academic distinction, which created considerable controversy both during her lifetime and after her death, ensured that her work was widely circulated and debated.
