3.0 out of 5 stars Great for being efficient, poor for finding true happiness, 29 Jun 2000
By A Customer
When I first got this book, I worked for a large company and I thought this books principles principles greatly improved my productivity.

Now I work for myself and have time to consider things more thoroughly, I realised that this book was partly responsible for me making myself thoroughly miserable.

It's fine to be an "effective" person - but what about your happiness? And the people around you? Is that not far more important than simply being "effective"? This book is grey and uninspiring because - although substantially better than most similar books - you still risk being turned into an automaton with regard to how you organise your life.

The first step in the book revolves around planning what people will say about you at your funeral. Well, interesting idea, but as you get older your values change. I've been "road testing" this book for three years now. I've now given up. I realise now that life is far more enjoyable when you are riding the crests of its waves, than if you spend your time locked up in a stuffy room pouring over your weekly diary, philosophising about what is the most "effective" way of slicing your life into neat half-hour chunks.

Too much emphasis on speculating on the future in todays society means few people are living life for the moment, and even fewer are fully tuned into the thoughts and feelings of those around them at any particular time.

I no longer recommend this book. As the old cliche goes: "Life is what happens whilst you are planning something else".

Jezar.

3.0 out of 5 stars Gets too weighed down in itself, 3 Jan 2004
The principles of this book are sound and it develops you as a person as you read it. Once finished you can look at the people around you and see how they focus their lives around often unimportant thing and how you can enrich yours and their lives through small changes.
However, the book goes too far in many ways, suggesting that this should be used to solve every problem in the designated step by step manner. A better use of it would be as a general guide and a uselful tool in the more exteme situations.
The other reason for such a harsh score is I found the book patronising and the continuing "real life examples" which are presented as true seem to fit too neatly and are in no way backed up with anything tangible making them seem like page fillers.

3.0 out of 5 stars A great reminder of the 7 Habits, 4 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This CD was not what I expected, it is a summary of the 7 Habits, and therefore does not go into specific detail eg. How to understand before being understood. Having said that Covey is a fantastic narrator and you gain a lot just listening to his delivery.

3.0 out of 5 stars No seperate tracks?, 26 May 2009

I have previously read the book and thought that the CD would be a good way to easily refresh my memory on this. I do think that the book and CD contain some very good information. I was disappointed however that the CD is just 1 track (e.g you can't skip forward and back by track just time).
This is fine if you want to listen to the CD without stopping, or changing CD but makes it very hard to refer back to the individual habits if you want to listen to them at a later time.

3.0 out of 5 stars A well structured approach to self improvement., 30 Sep 2008

I've owned the seven habits for a number of years now, and find the book useful as summary of principles found in other literature.

The 7 habit format helps the reader to retain in memory the ideas presented in the book and for this alone is worth the purchase.

I'd agree with other reviewers that the principles in Dr Coveys book are a repackaging of other authors thoughts/work, but to be frank he clearly states that him self.

All in all a good book for anyones book shelf, and worth re-visiting every so often.

3.0 out of 5 stars Read it so you'll know what everyone is talking about., 4 May 1997
By A Customer
I don't know if Covey invented the word proactive, but it and other business buzz words are explained in this book. If you are into self-help, you'll enjoy the warm manner that the book is written along with the Carnegie-like anecdotes. The book provides a system to prioritize and organize your personal and business life based on your principles. Keep the book for future reference like a text book if you are serious about applying it to your life; otherwise, get what you can out of it and share it with a fellow employee.

3.0 out of 5 stars need more like this, 2 Sep 2009
By Lidy Benton "Bookworm" (London, England) - See all my reviews
I really think you get a lot of value out of this book. When times are tough which they are right now we need to read to keep on our game. If you enjoy Covey's work then you will also get a lot out of a new book that I have just read called To Make a Difference by Colin Turner. Like Covey he explains things in a way that you can immediately relate to and stays in your mind. To become highly effective we have to make changes in our life and that is why To Make a Difference works on a very accessible level. To Make a Difference: The Book That Changes Everything
