This review is from: Ben Jonson: A Life (Garland Library of Medieval) (Paperback)
If you're interested in the life and context of Ben Jonson then this is the book to read. Riggs takes an expansive look at the man and the times in which he lived and wrote, giving us a vivid picture of both. He is meticulous when it comes to documenting Jonson's friends and patrons, not least the Sidney-Essex-Herbert circle. He is also good on Jonson's relationships with John Donne, Lucy Bedford, and Mary Wroth.

Moving way beyond the common view of Jonson as an unruly rebel rouser who wrote some satirical comedies and argued with Shakespeare at the Mermaid, this also gives us Jonson the courtier, the political animal, and the life-long friend.
