5.0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking and erudite, 2 May 2010
This review is from: Veil of Isis: An Essay on the History of the Idea of Nature (Paperback)
I read bits of this book as background research for an undergraduate essay but I just couldn't put it away that easily. After the essay, I went back to it and read the whole thing, slowly to let every section sink in and to try and appreciate the vast amount of both information and philosophical - dare I say - magic that goes into every page. There's something inspiring about this book, encompassing as it does the idea of nature and the representations of an idea that have developed over the centuries from the pagan philosophers to the present day. Hadot is not necessarily light reading but he is also not tiresome or stuffy in any sense. The Veil of Isis is a truly enjoyable and fascinating account of the history of an idea that is more central to cultural development than people often realise.
