Bought this to get started in this language as an employer decided to use it, and I was required to get at least a basic understanding. It is great for just that.

It gives a broad knowledge of most of the useful features in ASP.NET, however it doesn't go much at all into many of the functions and methods of VB and particularly C#, which I understand as C# is a more difficult language and this is a beginner book. If you have any experience whatsoever in ASP.NET though, I would recommend looking at other options as this really is a beginner book from the ground up.

Don't get me wrong it's written really well, it really is about an hour per chapter, and has greatly helped me.

Of course there are many ways of learning a new skill - but I honestly cannot imagine an easier or more efficient way of teaching yourself asp.net than with this book. The author is clearly an expert teacher and makes what could be a very difficult subject almost trivial to learn. You are guided through asp.net in a step by step approach - but it is kept short and succinct without any of the overkill you can get in other books where you feel you're following a giant list of instructions without any real idea why you're doing it. The other clever trick he uses is to subtly repeat the key messages several times though the text - so that the 2nd or 3rd time you think - "I must be doing well - I really get this."
It's obviously not a book for experienced developers - and you may well finish it in 2 or 3 days - and then move on to a more advanced reference book for further detail. But if you're after a quick and painless way of getting up to speed on the basics of asp.net then you won't do any better than this.

I'm an absolute beginner and have no coding, web design or development experience at all. I have found this book to be the best from all ASP.NET introductory books that I have seen. Book brilliantly introduces to web development whilst touching on Visual Basic and HTML as well albeit at very fundamental level. It definitely provides with good foundations allowing to move on to more complex topics covered by other books. And whilst my language of choice is C#, I totally support author's choice to use Visual Basic for introduction to ASP.NET. I only wish I discovered this book earlier. All in all, my advise to any complete novice is - start with this book.

Got the book as a Kindle download so no comments regarding the physical book. Views better on PC with colour and large screen than on e-ink. More importantly the book is clear and concise and does not require extended coding to illustrate a point. There are variations on platforms and versions of the IDE that you use but the book is generic enough to let you find your way round using VS 2010 for example. Using the book on the fly I feel that the one hour chapter designations may be a little too fast as I am taking longer. I haven't tried sitting down and dedicating a couple of hours solely to concentrating on the book. Overall a good investment for the beginner.

Repetitive. Concepts are explained and then explained again two pages later and again a few pages later. If all the repetitions are taken out of the book, it would become shorter and less tiring. However, it is a very good book for a beginner, although not a complete beginner. Some knowledge of HTML and Visual Basic are a pre-requisite before attempting to learn ASP.NET. Explanations are very clear. This is a very good and comprehensive introduction to ASP.NET. Worth the money!

For years I have wanted to learn programming and web design. This actually does it in very simple, logical steps. An excellent book without jargon and good illustrations that actually match those in Web developer which it comes with. Hurrah! Success at last!

I found this a book that was easy to follow and took me through the steps 1 by 1.
I had to make notes to remember how to do some things because the index is incomplete, but otherwise it is great.
