This should be a definite purchase for anyone taking the MySQL 5 exams. Other than highlighting the areas tested by the exams, it also gives good advice on how to prepare, what to expect and which parts of the MySQL website you should be familiar with. My use was limited to the developer exam only however it also covers the administrator exam should that be your goal. The certification format has changed since MySQL 4.x so get the heads up with this must have book.

This book is absolutely essential reading if you're to take the MySQL certification. In fact, although it's always wise to read around a topic from as many sources as possible, I don't believe anybody would have a problem passing the exam using this book alone. It's written in clear, non-ambiguous language and all examples are explained - a real rarity as far as technical books are concerned.

This is a pretty good book as a generic primer on MySQL basics that any half competent MySQL administrator/developer should know. If you are buying it primarily to learn the basics of MySQL and you are not already familiar with the subject matter of database systems theory, it is very useful indeed.
If, on the other hand, you already have reasonably extensive MySQL related experience (e.g. pros and cons of InnoDB vs. MyISAM, writing stored procedures and triggers, tuning sizes of various memory buffers, choosing and configuring hardware to maximize DB performance, basic replication configuration and related logs/files, multi-byte character encodings, space requirements and collations and granting/revoking permissions and setting up users, precedence of various configuration sources and options), then you will probably not learn a great deal from this book that you don't already know. Nevertheless, even if you are an experience MySQL DBA/Developer and plan to use this book as the sole study guide, it certainly covers enough of the subject matter that combined with some experience and deeper understanding, you will be able to pass the exam without any problems.
The book is divided into two halves. MySQL Developer and MySQL Administrator, broadly corresponding to the two certification exams. Note, however, that, from what I can remember from my exams, the exams aren't as clear cut on that separation as the book is. Some of the question in both exams touch upon subject matters covered in the other section of the book. So regardless of which exam you are preparing for you should read the entire book.
Considering this book is over 7 years old now, it is still reasonably close matches the subject matter covered in the exams, and teaches you enough to pass the exams. In light of that, it represents incredibly good value compared to the official Oracle study guide packs.

I've guickly fallen in love with this book and how it takes you through the complexities of MySQL in a simple, clearly explained, and easy to understand way. This book is perfect for everyone studying for the MySQL exam, but an equally valauble reference to anyone who's not, and just simply wants a well rounded guide to learn this amazing language. I have only good things to say about, it, and am finding because of this book MySQL is a pleasure to learn. A highly enjoyable read.

I've study DBA part and just review Developer part exams. I have to said that I pass both exams in 2 weeks time thanks to that book. First of all if you going to prepare for exam don't ignore DVD included. Chapters are quite detailed, but remember that every word could be important on exams. If you will read that book, have same previous experience with MySQL 5 and you will do review with official documentation you should be fine on exam.
Second very important usage for me is comprehensive knowledge source that referring to DBA work with MySQL. There are very few books out there doing same. I really like it as guide not only to pass Sun MySQL 5 DBA cert, but also as good printed reference for solving many issues you may find being MySQL DBA.
As I said.. I didn't look to much into dev exams, but it looks that quality is consistent so I may only recommend it as good lecture

Superb book for learning all the ins and outs of MySQL.
Only giving it a 4 because I would rather the practice questions were computerised instead of just in PDF question/answer files. Also, it is slightly dated now. I've just passed the MySQL 5.6 Developer certification with it, but quite a few exam questions weren't covered.
