If you like sports, basketball, MJ, you will love this book. Sam Smith had the opportunity to get behind the scenes with Michael, other players, management, and others in the Bulls organization. This allows us to be behind the scenes and see what is really going on.
Yeah, you learn about Michael's bad habits and some nastiness, but overall you find out what a great man he really is. Highly recommended.

This is an excellent book displaying the 'other side' of michael jordan. There are more bad points in this book than in any of the others I have read put together. Perhaps this is the weakness of this book in that it is to much bad news and not enough good. We know MJ is only human but surely the Bulls were not THIS bad?! The author seems to play up certain problems within the team for instance the relationship between horace grant and MJ. I have heard Horace talk about MJ in the best terms yet the author quotes only bad talk.
Perhaps it completes the picture of MJ as a human being as well as superhuman basketball player but if you want a general view of MJ the 'Playing for keeps' book is a far better title.

Read this back in the 90's when it first came out (sadly my brother's copy which is why I had to get my own). An excellent book, very much in a similar vein to "All played out", in that a reporter is able to gain a behind the scenes access that could only be dreamed of now in modern era sports. No press officer, media spokesman to adjust the story, what you get is pretty much the truth.

How hard was Michael Jordan to play with? Who did he like and dislike and why. It all comes out in this excellent addition to my own personal sports library. It even takes a look at the gambling that was beginning to surface and how this would have a knock on effect after the '93 Championship. A must read.

Sam Smith blatantly used Jordan's name to sell this book. I'm an MJ fanboy. However this book is about the Chicago Bulls (who I also liked during that era so didn't mind). Sam Smith knows what the books about and in the foreword sounds almost apologetic for using Jordan's name in the title as his cheap marketing ploy. It still gets four stars as it is well written, gives a good insight and account of the team which seems to be a neutral view and it had me engrossed that I couldn't put it down.

Although this is an interesting read the title is slightly misleading with the prominent emphasis on Michael Jordan. Jordan features very little in the book. It is more an overall view of the bulls first championship season and would be more aptly named the King rules as Stacey king seems to be the most talked about squad member in the book.

More stats than story in my opinion during the regular season. The book gets better during the playoffs and championship series.

very good inside look of one of the greatest teams ever and the greatest player to ever play the game.
