5.0 out of 5 stars "He who saves one life saves the world entire..."
Schindler's List, Thomas Keneally's 1980 non-fiction "novel" about Oskar Schindler's transformation from a bon vivant German (actually, Sudeten German, born in what is now part of the Czech Republic) war profiteer to savior of over 1,000 Jews during World War II, is one of the most fascinating accounts about the darkest chapter of that global conflict, the Holocaust. It...

3.0 out of 5 stars An important story- but poorly written
Not as poignant as Night or as eloquantly descriptive as Approaches to Auschwitz, Schindlers List is as the back cover suggests- a book written for development into a movie. It was interesting to see where Speilberg took liberty. The author himself cautions that certain elements of the book were fictionalized, however this does not detract from the absolute horror the...

5.0 out of 5 stars Detailed and Interesting! Opens your eyes!, 28 Mar. 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Schindler's List (Paperback)
The book did a very succesful job in letting me know the true feeling and dedication of the character, Herr Oskar Schindler. Presents amazing mental pictures and lets you feel the relief and pain of all of the captives. It developed a true respect for WWII and helped me understand the anguish that these people went through. Truly the most moving and touching book that I have ever encountered!

4.0 out of 5 stars Schindler was truly sent by God., 11 Dec. 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Schindler's List (Paperback)
One of the best novels I ever read on the Holocaust. One man really does make a difference. Without Schindler hundreds of Jewish prisoners would have been exterminated in the death camps. A fast, easy reading book with characters who are simply evil incarnate. Schindler was a saint and the world should never forget what he did during the war.

5.0 out of 5 stars A remarkable story from the pen of Australia's finest author, 6 Oct. 1999

This review is from: Schindler's List (Paperback)
Of all the books written on the subject of the Holocaust, there can be little doubt that Thomas Kenealy's remarkable story will be one of the most enduring. Beautifully written and extremely well researched, this book is utterly compelling from page one. Its importance shouldn't be underestimated. Spielberg clearly did the book justice with his extraordinary screen adaptation. But as ever, the book outshines the silver screen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Touching and magnificient!, 20 April 2009
By
This review is from: Schindler's Ark (Paperback)
This book was captivating from start to finish. I was immediately drawn in to the harshness that the Jewish population had to go through. While this book does look at the general suffering of the people, it focuses in on the story of Schindler who, with his great sense of humanity saves over a thousand lives, and helped to create generations and generations of people who otherwise would have been non existant today. Thomas Keneally also tells the individual stories of a few of the Shindler Jew's and of their terrible plight and what they had to endure. At many times throughout the book I was filled with a sense of horror although Schindler and his efforts are simply outstanding. This is a must read, and I would definitely recommend.

This review is from: Schindler's Ark (Paperback)
Schindler's List is a book, which not only portrays the truth of the war years but also the feelings and actions of the amazing characters that persevered with life through them. This book should be read by everyone sometime in their life, it is gripping, compelling and moving, everything a good book needs mixed into one and gives a deep and thoughtful insight into the world that these people put up with spectacularly and proudly. A brilliant read and deserves a full 5 stars!

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing true story ponderously written, 7 Feb. 2013

This review is from: Schindler's Ark (Paperback)
This book tells the extraordinary tale of Oskar Schindler and the Jews he saved from the Nazi death camps. The story itself is incredible, but it could have been told better. Keneally's prose is often ponderous and earnest, making it hard to plough through in places. But this is a story that can't be stifled by less than stellar writing. If you can push past the professorial tone, you'll find horror and humanity side by side in this book in a way that you can't imagine.

4.0 out of 5 stars A work of great intellect and sensitivity, 28 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Schindler's Ark (Paperback)
I cannot recommend this book highly enough (I almost wrote 'novel' because that's how it reads). Four stars merely because I cannot 'love' an account of genocide and the struggle against horror. But it's not enough to say you've 'seen the film'. The book is the real deal, as good as the film is, especially in that it relates the real story eg of how the women were actually extracted from Auschwitz - and how, in reality, the list was put together.

5.0 out of 5 stars A violent, eye-opening masterpiece, 28 May 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Schindler's List (Paperback)
I read this book for a school assigment, and found it to be very powerful. It details from actual testimonies, the horror that these people went through, and the saviour that rescued them from it. It should be read by everyone who can take its violent, unrelenting nature. It was written well, with a talented writer's style. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A haunting, disturbing, yet uplifting account, 19 July 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Schindler's List (Paperback)
Schindler's List has quickly become a modern classic. Frequently, books with such sensitive subject matter are not subject to the same scrutiny as books with less disturbing topics. But apply that scrutiny to this book and the book holds firm. It is excellently written, harsh and clear in its detail as well as quite historically accurate.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read book. Buy it!!!!, 21 Jun. 2008
This review is from: Schindler's Ark (Paperback)
Best holocaust book I have read to date. Very well written and informative. Book does differ from the film with obvious detail that you would expect. Read the Pianist after this but did not come close to this one.

Buy it!! Read it!! Remember!!
