4.0 out of 5 stars An Unfortunately Neglected Approach Due To Commercial Exploitations

3.0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing/ missing pages.
The book arrived in good time, it is quite scruffy, pages 103/104, 112/113,125/126. 131/132, & 133/134 are missing, obviously it was in a library & has been used many times, it is a bit smelly as if it has been left in a damp atmosphere. it is a very good book as far as body shaping is concerned, but the pages which are missing are part of an exercise regime which is very...

4.0 out of 5 stars An Unfortunately Neglected Approach Due To Commercial Exploitations, 17 Mar. 2014

It seems that the cry of ‘emancipation for women’ has turned out to be one big joke in a number of ways. Besides denying women their natural femininity, women are essentially conned out of much of their disappointingly unfulfilling salaries by commercial exploitation based on predatory psychological manipulations.

Plenty of women are striving admirably to attain a glorious figure that will make them feel better about themselves, attract the hungry gapes of males, encourage feelings of unbearable jealousy in their fellow womenfolk and equip their bodies with the physical advantages that will better prepare them for motherhood.

However, the methods most women in gyms are engaging in to achieve such ends are almost invariably not the methods that will bring optimum results in minimal time – far from it.

There is no doubt in my mind that if a woman wishes to shed body fat and regain a firm, yet supple unmistakable feminine shape with maximum health benefits, intensive resistance training through a mixture of body-weight exercises and traditional dumbbells and barbells are unmatched in terms of success. These women need to be lifting dumbbells and barbells and executing bench presses, squats, deadlifts, overhead presses, and various other resistance exercises that will emphasise their feminine physique and improve their health in ways that will be certainly be noticed in general daily living.

It is a complete myth to assume that the practice of lifting weights to improve one’s physical qualities and turn physical weaknesses into strengths is a solely masculine endeavour. It must be noted that females are not as physically active as they used to be as technology as largely replaced the physical effort previously required in the completion of all domestic and most workplace tasks, and that therefore, women today have a greater need to incorporate intensive resistance training into their lifestyles.

Arnold’s book illustrates that working with iron need not be considered as solely a quest for developing raw strength – beautiful feminine aesthetics and comprehensive bodily health and functionality are just as primary as strength gains – and if you disagree, just seek photos of the breathtaking Rachel McLish when she was in her bodybuilding heyday.

I would have liked to have seen more emphasis on traditional press-ups, chin-ups and pull-ups as these body-weight exercises would be fantastically beneficial, however I’d imagine this may simply have been due to a lack of space. Furthermore, the section on Diet & Nutrition is out-dated and as a result doesn’t consider diet issues that are now available due to subsequent studies, such as the over-consumption of wheat products.

Perhaps if Arnold were to rewrite this work for a new edition, he would encourage women to throw away their high heels due to the undeniable negative impact on posture, general health and (sadly now rare) feminine gracefulness. It has to be stated that Arnold neglects the importance of keeping posture in mind when improving women’s physical attributes. It is a tragedy to see otherwise pretty and well apportioned females suffer from the atrocious posture that the over-wearing of heels on footwear brings. Wearing footwear with elevated heels when weight-training is especially bad for posture and will induce injury. People of both sexes should be well-drilled on this important fact before commencing a weight-training programme.

All this being said, Arnold’s Body-shaping For Women is an excellent manual for women who are serious about getting their bodies into great shape, and (if they can make resistance training part of their permanent lifestyle) keeping it that way!

This book is very informative and many of the exercises can be done at home - you don't need the gym. I've just started with the easiest programme and hope to build up to the gym programme in a few months. According to Arnold I am not a lost cause I just need to take control of myself!
