It as Hannah's way of building herself up so she could cope with the problems of that summer in Ireland. At first there were no problmes, because then there was only Sam, kind, chivalrous, considerate Sam, who always knew the right things to say and the righyt time to say them.
But the minute Travis joined them she could feel her confidence beginning to ebb away. Because Travis was the son Sam had rejected long befoere he knew Hannah, the prodiga; who had returned from his self-imposed exile and who now wanted his father back.
Worse still, this attempted reconcilitaion between father and son had been her own idea. And as she looked around herself at a country racked by strife, she could see in it a reflection of their common dilemma, the three-sided struggle for affection that was fast turning into an emotional battleground of its owm....
