5.0 out of 5 stars Neil Young - Renaissance Hippy?
Neil Young's book is many things: it's a rock memoir, a stream of his consciousness, his apologia, a eulogy for his passed friends and collaborators, an eco-propoganda piece, high-definition audio propaganda piece, a love letter to his family, an unedited mish-mash, an insight to creativity, classic car story, anti-war campaign pamphlet, a confession and more. And I...

3.0 out of 5 stars Marred by lack of organisation and editing
I am a huge Neil Young fan and I enjoyed large parts of this book. I can see why its rambling nature might have a certain charm for some readers. It does create a feeling of intimacy and, unlike so many other books of this kind, one does not suspect that a ghost writer hovered over the author's shoulder. However, it delivers much less than it promises and there is a...

I have read this book twice in the last nine days. It's very direct but in places deliberately evasive. Bits of it are tragic and extremely sad, yet bits are laced with extraordinary humour. Parts of it disappoint but that's somehow masked by the parts that are simply brilliant. It's rough and ready, but you can't help be impressed by the way honesty and feeling are present in place of glossy production values. I thought: what does that remind me of? Oh yeah, most Neil Young studio albums!! Seriously, an essential read for any Young fan. Wonderful.

Item is in great condition but the writing is unconstructed and hazy at the best of times. "The man is crazy" ;)

2.0 out of 5 stars Rambling on, 28 Mar 2013
I had really been looking forward to reading this as I am a longstanding fan of NY's music. But boy does he ramble in print! The book is written in generally very short chapters which jump about all over the place both in content and chronology. The sections in which he describes the music and its recording are really interesting, but unfortunately they are very few and far between. On several occasions NY starts an anecdote which just fizzles out without any apparent conclusion, and I lost count of the number of times he returns to his pet subject of recorded sound quality.

In short, a book which is for fans only and which reveals surprisingly little about the man himself. Read 'Shakey' instead.
