Some of the world's finest and most important texts can also be scattered with nuances and ambiguities that challenge our powers of interpretation. The Christian bible may well be the ultimate example of this. Jasper guides aspiring bible readers into a new relationship with scripture that it's treasures might be revealed to a new generation. This was a set text on my Hermeneutics module and as a novice in this area I found it immensely helpful.

This is the best book I have every read for years! If you are interested in "meaning" you will be come aware that it depends on "interpretation", and "interpretation" of something, a historical event, a sacred text, a work of art, develops as centuries go by. This very extremely economical small paperback by David Jasper, Professor in Literature and Theology at the University of Glasgow (whom I will love to meet one day!).This is a concise and clear exposition of the subject bringing up to date through a series short, superb and clearly written chapters each ending up with a summary and Activities-Questions and, at the end, it includes post-modernism theories!. Anybody doing an BA, an MA, or PhD and wishes to have the most perfect introduction on the subject of the theory of interpretation (or hermeneutics) is will find this 150 small pages book not only informative but extremely inspiring, published 9 years ago in 2004, I was upset that nobody had told me about it before! (I wish David Japer could write one on Axiology (theory of values). This book is superb! Dr Guillem Ramos-Poquí MA(RCA) PhD (Fine Art Painting)
