5.0 out of 5 stars A picture speaks a thousand words, 10 Mar. 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: The Red Book (Caldecott Honor Book) (Hardcover)
This book is wonderful! For those of you who enjoyed "The Snowman" this will be a delight. The story is told with no words; just simple, evocative illustrations. A young girl happens upon a book on the street, opens it and discovers a world far away from her snowy, city life. Our character finds herself so absorbed that she becomes a part of that new world, ensuring that the book is left behind to ensure a beautifully self-propagating storyline.
This is perfect for children and adults alike.

Children's authors are advised to leave open questions in the text, so that part of the narrative can be conveyed through the pictures. In "The Red Book", illustrator, Barbara Lehman, goes one better, by dispensing with words altogether and telling an entire story through pictures. And what a story it is! A young girl on her way to school stops to pick up a red volume half buried in a snow bank. She opens the book to discover a sequence of illustrations depicting a solitary boy walking along a tropical beach towards . . . a red book, half buried in the sand. The complex plot that follows is communicated seamlessly. This book, which celebrates human connection, invites sharing and discussion precisely because we must supply the missing words. A wonderful bed-time offering.
Selected as a Book of the Month by the "Mums Write!" website (April, 2012)

I like the idea of a book with no words, that gives us however the opportunity to say and thing to many things and imagine different points of views. There is nothing i didn't like. It is great to have it and play with this book.
