I loved Studs Terkel's "Working" and "Gig", to me, was a revised, updated, expanded version of "Working". It has lost some of the anger and passion - but I think that is a fair reflection of how work has changed - people are less angry about their jobs now than in the early 1970s. Bowe and his co-writers have expanded the range of people interviewed and it may be even better than "Working" at how truthful the stories are. For example, the pretzel seller discussing how and how much she stole was quite an exceptional piece of journalism.
My children are reading this book. I hope that it makes them more empathetic to the adults they meet and more thoughtful about what they would like to do with their lives. Of course, if I find them working at a pretzel stall I will conclude they learned too well.
