5.0 out of 5 stars Very clear and comprehensive
I can't recommend this book enough. I have just used it to build a mountain bike from scratch. Everyone warned me about fitting the gears and the brakes, but I followed the instructions here to the letter and had no trouble. Chose it because it had decent pictures/expalnations to follow. Good price, and quick delivery. use it frequently, so its getting a bit grubby now

I can't recommend this book enough. I have just used it to build a mountain bike from scratch. Everyone warned me about fitting the gears and the brakes, but I followed the instructions here to the letter and had no trouble. Of course it's only a maintenance manual - not a bike building book - but it's a good starting point.
Each section starts with a comparison of different types of components, for example, types of rear hub. This is really useful because with most books you don't know what you are dealing with and so don't know which instructions to follow.
The instructions are straightforward and practical. He often sets out the various alternative methods of dealing with something - e.g. fitting a chain. Most importantly the instructions are accompanied by step by step photographs - really clear and you get more of them than in other books.
I also own the Haynes manual, which looks more comprehensive at first glance but infact isn't so clear. I prefer this book.
